We are excited to be sharing our 2nd artist in residence film featuring Millie Steele. Millie shares her ideas and inspirations behind the perplexing installations she made during the residency, experimenting with time and motion, which felt at times poignantly ominous in this unprecedented time.
"This residency gave me the time and space to experiment with ideas I had been developing during lockdown. The work I have made is particularly interested in the notion of time and how we spend it. I created motorised sculptures out of unwanted items I found in my shed; a swing ball game, playstation wheels, scalextrics, clocks, an old karaoke microphone.”
"One piece I made included three motorised playstation wheels. The wheels zealously spin around the floor on an axis, going nowhere, until they wear themselves out. It is a comment on temporality and the ceaselessness of time. "
"Another piece is made from an old swing ball game. The swing ball constantly spins around on its own, without the need of someone there to keep hitting it. I was interested in making items that appeared to be stuck in time, which is how I’ve been feeling over the past few months. "
“Thank you SVA for this opportunity!! And thank you to Locodooms for making this film! “

Millie Steele graduated from the University of Gloucestershire in 2017 and has since been working as a 3D Artist Technician. Her sculptures and installations are concerned with the notion of time and coincidence. She manipulates everyday objects to radically shift their meaning, often highlighting human issues and fears for the future.
This residency is part of a series which offer space and time to artists to make and show work in the gallery. Whilst the gallery is closed to the public, the residencies are viewable from the street and online. So keep an eye out on social media for updates or if you are passing the gallery.
