IF - Immersive Fields is a brand new festival working with artists to create fully spatialised audio-visual installations - live and pre-recorded - taking the audience inside the music, bathed in sound and light.
John Foxx’s Cathedral Oceans was recently described by Fact mag as “a musical touchstone for the ages” and "a formative influence on everyone from Aphex Twin and Juan Atkins to Junior Boys and Clint Mansell”. Originally released across three volumes in 1997, 2003 and 2005 respectively, the Cathedral Oceans ambient trilogy was accompanied by videos featuring photographs of buildings, statues and foliage collected by Foxx over a number of years, which he describes as a “moving stained glass window that you can sit and look at for hours.”
A concept that began as early as 1983, the sonic concepts that underpin the project found their genesis in Foxx’s childhood experience singing in a choir. “During that time I became very interested in the way that sound worked in big spaces, churches particularly… I was really inspired by the juxtaposition of old style church music with modern technology and synthesizers creating notional space, rather than real space.” Grand and uncompromising, Cathedral Oceans is finally taking its place at the alter of ambient music.
