Mali’s residency will involve creating multiple artworks, including life-sized large scale paintings. Through her works, she cultivates and shares personal mythologies that are rich in symbolism.
Mali on her work:
“Through my works, I cultivate and tell personal mythologies that are rich in symbolism. Through mediums ranging from watercolour to acrylic to oil to dried flower petals, I explore notions of the self, spirituality, connection with nature, and ‘wild woman’ archetypes. The style of most of my works could be described as semi-self-portraiture, the figures always somewhat resembling myself, the artist, yet remaining ambiguous and baring identities and stories of their own.
My artworks are heavily stylised and a lot of significance lies behind this. The distinctive pink colouring found in almost all of my figurative works resembles aura and an unearthly version or part of the self, such as spirit. It is suggested that the figures exist on the threshold of reality and another realm, perhaps the spiritual, mystical, magical or cosmic. The bodies I paint are at once earthly and auric.”
