Rex Birchmore: Crab Museum

  • Stroud Valleys Artspace 4 John Street Stroud United Kingdom (map)

Exhibition

30th July – 5th August

Exhibition opening night: Tuesday 30th July 7.30pm

The Crab Museum is collection of absurd art pieces, and began in 2006 when I was studying at Hereford College of Arts. A friend brought me some Masked Crabs for a project about 'Ritual', and I've been captured by this particular species ever since. Their gangly and awkward appearance resonated with my own. From here on I wanted to incorporate crabs into all my works. They are the thing that binds my otherwise disjointed ideas.

Artifacts usually predate a museum's existence, and, maybe I can thank my excessive collecting and very dyslexic nature for how much I enjoy the challenge of filling this one.

Having a conscious consideration for the natural world is of high importance! No crabs were killed in the making of this Museum. However, taking washed-up specimens needed to be balanced with collecting beach plastics. Both used in my work but with no anthropomorphism of the crabs. The plastic however, is placed in situations to emphasize just how much of a disgusting situation we are in with regards to our seas.

Opening Times:

10am-4pm
