Friday 19th – Saturday 27th July
Exhibition opening: Friday 19th July 6-8pm
Isobel Harper and Sophie Wright present a body of visual and written work that reflects the reciprocal relationships between personal histories, internal worlds and physical environments.
Isobel practises letter carving in stone and Sophie’s work consists primarily of drawings and paintings on delicate or translucent surfaces. The contrast in material presence of their respective works has brought up ideas of weight and lightness; they are intending to communicate the different ways in which they shape and are shaped by their materials, memories and surroundings.
The title “Ourself— Behind Ourself” references a poem by Emily Dickinson: “One need not be a chamber— to be haunted”. The poem reflects a central motif in Sophie and Isobel’s individual and collaborative work: that of the capacity for spaces, objects and people to hold hauntings. They are interested in the idea that material and emotional interactions leave traces on their environments and on their human and material participants. Relationships of haunting involve touching and being touched, moving and being moved.
Both of their work explores the visual possibilities of language and they both approach image-making with a consideration of poetic logic. Through collaborative writing practices and a series of visual works, they have synthesised themes of haunting, personal histories and a dreamlike persistence of language. The collaborative process has solidified both what they share and how their approaches differ, resulting in a diverse body of work to be exhibited alongside a small publication containing both collaborative and solo texts.
